Leftovers for Barn Charm

I am not getting a chance to get out for a drive, so combing through the archives for photos I have not posted...the first three photos I have had resized since the days I took them with the intention of using them for Barn Charm but have never fit them in. The first is from south and west of Terre Haute, I think. Probably still in Illinois but I would not swear to it.
The one above is north of me about 8 or 10 miles...we are usually going 60/65 miles an hour, and no chance to get a drive by because of how it is situated, so last fall we turned off on to the road that goes past it for me to have a chance to photograph it. I don't know why I did not zoom in for some close up shots...it was not a busy road...and we were just out for a drive.
Now the barn above is in Parke County...and has seen better days. Makes me think someone has had a hard-scrabble life. Still, I like it...just for the feel of it. It is a drive-by-slowly shot. The road is full of potholes that goes by this barn.
This last shot has been converted to B&W...taken in Tennessee last spring.

I know this is not the greatest photo, but it really appeals to me...taken today while it was snowing. Enlarge it...I think you will see the appeal...well, maybe some will. Others will probably think I am a little bit crazy and they would not be far wrong.

It is time for Friday's fences again, so lets begin with something totally new. This is from the strip pits, taken Tuesday evening. I probably should have only posted the photo below, but went ahead and did both of them.

For some old, the above was taken I don't know when...kind of blurry...and has never been published for that reason.
This last one is old...with the one below being an altered version of the above. But don't ask me what I did because I don't have a clue. It was done so long ago.

This was not taken today, though it could have been. It is just so gray and overcast, and I am so tired of it. Of course, we all know it won't be long until we are complaining about heat, so should just keep quiet and enjoy having reasons to sit at the computer.

I am going to show a couple barns from the last drive....back in January. I hope they are not as dark on your computer as on mine...specially the one above. It is hard to tell on this laptop how things are going to show up. Sometimes they look fine on other computers, and a few times not so hot.
I have passed the above barn several times and not found it appealing, but let there be a little snow and I think it makes a fine subject.
This one I have taken in different seasons, and like it each and every time I see it.
I have played with this one because it was soooo dark...I need to learn to set my camera to compensate for snow on the ground but never think of it till it is too late.

Anyway, I want to post this for Tricia's Barn Charm meme...and will attempt to visit everyone but it may take a few days.

Just had to show--there is another photo of it Here at my other blog.

It also tells why I have not been blogging...nothing major...just a winter cold. Anyway, hoping to get back in the swing of things soon. I was going to join Barn Charm, but by the time I decided on a photo, was too tired to even think about trying to visit everyone else. But if I can't at least try to visit everyone else, I feel guilty joining.

These are from a couple weeks ago...the evening glow was just beginning to try to start....
but as you can see it it was overcast and didn't have much chance. It was there for just a minute...I think the middle shot shows it.

Just thought I would give you the whole photo from which the header photo was taken. It is one of all time favorite photos. I am not sure if it is such a wonderful shot, so much as it holds so many memories for me. It is scanned from a print, taken in the winter of 1978-79. I do not remember the exact date, but am almost positive it was the snow that took out our power for 3 days. I think I have used it as my header photo on one of my blogs each winter since I began blogging.

Round for Barn Charm....

I will start out by saying that all of these have been shown in previous posts, but don't think I have shown them in Barn Charm....

I thought first about trying to round up all my round barn photos...and I happened across this one while looking for something else. This one is down close to Washington, Indiana.

And this one is from south of here as well, but I couldn't find it if I had to...
Anyway, those are my barns.....
I am not sure what the following would be classified as. I part of the time think they are just for grain storage, but then some days I think there might be a bit more to them.
The top one we seen somewhere in our travels...but I think it is over on the western side of Illinois, but I couldn't swear to it. If I could find where I posted it before, it might tell me more than I know now, but I am running late getting this ready to post, so not taking time to look it up.

The ones below, I could eventually find...
They are over in Illinois, south of U.S. Route 36....east of Tuscola, Illinois...but just where I am not sure. I know I seen the tops of them from the highway...and we went on a hunt and found them. When I spied their roofs from the highway, I thought I had found more round barns...

I was not too disappointed when I found these instead.

I just think they are so interesting...

Anyway, even though they may not technically be barns, I hope you find them of interest.

This was taken January 11, 2011...and here it is a year later and we have hardly seen snow. I am ready for a good snow...there is no better time to take pictures. And I love to be out and about then. We very seldom meet anyone else on days like the one above...can take our time, stop when we want...and for sure no one is going to be speeding by.

I wish I could find some taken at another time...before the vines were growing up the sides.
It was actually not very attractive...but these vines make it appeal to me so much more. It is just too bad that they cause such harm to buildings.

This barn is just east of Rockville, Indiana...
I had admired this barn for years before I realized that the road that went by it was a public road and not a private drive.

I was looking for some photos for something other than blogging and ran across these...and thought they would make a good Friday's fences post. I did remember the one above, but had totally forgotten the one below. Both of these are scans...either of slides or actual photos. I don't recall which.
The one below was taken a couple or three years ago...with a digital camera. It is not too far from here...every time I pass it I think it is the prettiest view no matter what the time of year.

This one was definitely south of Terre Haute, but just can't remember if it was on the day we went to Goose Pond, or on the day we were over in Illinois...and I am not taking the time to look.

I love how sturdy and true itwas built...

We trimmed some branches from our crab apple tree a bit back...the city has not picked up the brush yet. For which I am sort of thankful. These sparrow gather in it off and on all day.
They come as one and leave as one...they go between this little brush pile and the feeders almost as if they were joined at the wing-tip.

I think these are even better if enlarged. I could not get any view that did not have a busy background.

Some photos just leave me without a clue to what to title the post...and this is one of them. Roger could only pause for me to take this pic and one more on a little farther. Every time I look at it I see something new. I don't know how many times I looked at it before I noticed the skull on the tree above the silhouette. And I love the bell...and the old truck. It almost looks like they have recently put stuff under the roof to keep it out of the weather. I wonder if they have get togethers under this...notice the chairs stacked and the picnic tables stacked up.

When we were out on our last little drive, the above is what came into view....oh, and BTW, it is the farm where the horse was at in this post.
I was impressed with the design of the cupola, even if the barn does need a lot of TLC.
We eased pm along and I stopped to take a couple photos that included the pond and one of the horses.
Notice the dog laying in the grass near the corner of the white building...although I was stopping for the view of the barn, I liked that he was laying there.

Short-eared owl

I thought this was the best shot I got of the short-eared owl last week. You can right-click on it to open it up in another tab in order to be able to view it full sized....I have sized it a big bigger than I normally do. I love the evening light in this one.

A little perspective...

This first shot is not so good, but just wanted you to see this lichen in perspective...it was on the top of these posts. They were about 30 inches high...give or take an inch or two. Roger noticed it...not me.

I have never seen it with the red. If you will click the above picture to enlarge it, you will notice that the red is like a pod containing the lichen. At least I call this lichen. If you know different, please be sure to say so.

I am at least going to do this entry for Barn Charm....not sure how much regular blogging I am going to be doing. I don't remember where the above barn was at.
But the bottom two I do know...I have taken both on numerous occasions. The one above is on 59, just north of Mansfield. Every picture I have taken of it is a drive by, with this probably being the most successful one of all that I have taken.
And the barn above is on Coffing Brothers road, north of the Coffing Brothers Orchard.

Believe it or not, these were taken about 4 hours ago in Parke County in Indiana. It was so dark and dreary today that I had the ISO set at 800 and 1600 all the time...

I hit the auto contrast button on all these shots to brighten them up just a bit...though you may not think they look bright at all.

I just loved all the matching red buildings....
and wondered why this one was left white.

I know the first and third were taken with me leaning back and taking a photo through the window behind Roger...and I think the second one two. Oh, that reminds me they are taken while going between 55 and 60 mph. You can tell it in the second photo for sure.

The last time we were up to Mansfield, the water was the lowest we had ever seen it. With having had some rain, and figuring they will be lowering the dam on up the way, we decided to check it out Sunday. As you can see there is plenty of water coming over the dam and it has been so high it has started washing dead trees over.

Since I only got to capture one view of these subjects, I thought I would post them together. I think the were all three south of Terre Haute, but not sure just where. I am almost positive the first one is in Illinois, and the second one may be too. It was somewhere close to the state line, so can not be sure one way or the other.
It is one of the most well maintained barns I have seen. Everything is just so about the whole set up. It made me wonder what it is used for.
And as you can see with the last one, it is from within the car...I think though that Roger did pause. Both the first and last barns have seen better days....

When I first planted my wisteria, the shoots on it were not a whole lot bigger around than a pencil. I braided them together and started training it up the trellis. Look how big it has gotten.

Normally our dogwood has fall colors of gold to orange, to red and deep red. This year, it is almost all this deep, deep red. Rather than being boring to look at like it sounds, it is absolutely gorgeous.

I posted a barn yesterday from our round about way of going to the Goose Pond area here in Indiana...well here is another from that drive. We were on our way home, when we spotted this one...it was hit the brakes and back up time.
I like this one so much...because it is aged I suppose. It is one that I would love to convert to a house if it were mine.
I was so happy that it was where I could take my time and snap a few different views. I don't get to do that near as much as I would like.
Even though I think the vine is pretty growing up the wall, if it were mine, it would not be there. I would have it pulled down too quick to talk about.
The roof needs a little bit of love...I hope it gets it because this is a beautiful barn in my opinion.

I have so many barns....I keep thinking about putting them all up on a barns only blog...but I do well to keep this and Pics and Pieces running. So occasionally, I show barns more than once a week. We found this one just last week in our rambling drive to Goose Pond area.
I am not sure how much longer this barn will be standing...and I would love to know what has happened to all the wood that is gone.
I could not help but wonder if it was taken to make picture frames....
I really hate seeing barns fall apart...and kind of love them all the more when their life is ebbing away.

I was going to save the above for Friday Fences...but want to go ahead and put it here because it it is the fence in front of the barn pictured here.
And I love looking across fields and seeing all the color...
I think fall has always been my favorite time of year, but even more so since I am older.

I am drawing a blank for a title for this post...we stopped for me to take a photo looking down a railroad. I took time to snap a couple pictures of these flowers.
Even though they would be classified as weeds, on close inspection, they are beautiful.

One farm's buildings for Barn Charm

I have admired this farm for a long time...it is one we pass by fairly often...can see this big barn from the highway. I had not realized at first that there was a road going by it...but when I did we always seems to be headed someplace specific or headed home. But Friday was my day to snap a few photos. This was taken almost at the highway...but I was zoomed in some.
Taken from the same place as the top photo, but zoomed in closer...
and this is another view of the same building as the one above it. I probably like this photo best of all cause there seems more depth to it.
But man oh man--do I love this barn! It is a humdinger, if I do say so myself. I was not disappointed in it at all.

Not sure what kind of weed this is...it is not a milkweed.

Edited to add: Think I am going to have to eat my words. My North told me it might be Swamp Milkweed, sometimes known as Rose Milkweed. After a google search and looking at the images, I believe she is right. It doesn't have the big oval leaves of the milkweed I know...but guess I should have known it was some type of milkweed because the seeds look so similar.

I am sure that for some farmers, these hay bales would be a treasure to have. Did anyone else catch the story that it was cheaper to ship hay to China than to California dairy farmers?

When we went fishing the other day, we first stopped and fished the tail waters of the dam...it is run by our Dept. of Natural Resources. They have put up a small playground there, and there are a couple decks they have built to fish from.

Then there is the other side of the road...it is grown up in weeds and grass....and these pink coneflowers were scattered all through it. I wonder were the seeds scattered by man or by birds.
