Viceroy

I passed through the strip pits the other day, and saw 3 or 4 Viceroys. To be honest, I think this photo almost doesn't look like a real butterfly, but I assure you it is. They seem to set with their wings open, while a Monarch sits with them closed.

  1. Very clear photo, Rose. For sure monarchs like to sip nectar with their wings closed. I seem to spend a long time waiting for them to open up so I can catch their full beauty. But I have never noticed that viceroys sip nectar with their wings open. I will have to pay more attention!

  2. Now I have a 3rd favorite butterfly.. First there is the Monarch --then the Buckeye--and now the Viceroy... How beautiful --and a fabulous picture.

  5. Great shot! It looks so clean and new, I wonder if it was recently hatched?
