This is a hawk I saw out at the strip pits in Feb or 2009....I contacted All About Birds and she thought it was a Rough Legged Hawk. I have gained a few more readers since the original post, and wondered if anyone else has seen a hawk such as this, and if you did, where were you when you saw it.
This is a cropped photo, but you can click to expand the view.
so incredibly dark! no, i've never seen one like that.
ReplyDeleteI am the wrong person to ask about ID'ing a bird.
ReplyDeleteGreat shot no matter how many times you post it.
ReplyDeleteIt does look like a Rough-legged Hawk. A dark morph. MB
What a fantastic shot Rose. This shows freedom ;-)
ReplyDeleteWarm greetings! ;-)

Lovely shot, Rose. I'm not a lot of help ID'ing it, but looking in my bird books it does look like the dark morph of the rough-legged hawk.
ReplyDeleteI think it's what they call being in a dark morph...the colors change during different seasons and/or breeding.
ReplyDeleteHawks are most difficult to ID, that I know. But...as much as I go birding, you've managed to capture a wonderful in flight image. [if you'd like to add a link any time you have bird photos...drop by my "I'd Rather B Birdin' blog on Saturday at noon [Texas USA time]...the birders will more than appreciate your bird photos!!!]
By the way, the bird blog for photo linking is on my personal blog's right sidebar.
What do you think about a Zone-tailed Hawk?
ReplyDeleteI know the range isn't for here, but thought I'd suggest it anyway.
