One snap and this post sitter was gone...

I don't know what kind of hawk this is...I thought it was this one that I used to see out at the strip pits, but when it flew it did not have the white on the tail feathers.    I am thinking it is a Red-tailed hawk.  When it flew, I could see red at the base of the tail feathers on the back. But other than that bit of red, his back was dark.  The way he flew I did not get a good look at his underwings...  He was a pretty good sized hawk.

Edited to add:  Take a look HERE at the Red -tailed hawk...then scroll down and look through all the other photos, got numbers 8 and 9.  To add to the confusion, go HERE and then scroll down and look at the dark morph of the Swainson's Hawk.  I still believe it is a Red-tailed because there are so many in the area and we are just east of the range of the Swainson Hawk's area.

  1. No good asking me; not a species that occurs in the UK. At least he posed nicely for the one shot.

  3. Hello, it is a beautiful raptor. It seems kind of dark for Red Tail and the beak does not look like an Eagle's beak. I hope someone can help with the id.

Beautiful photo. Happy Monday, enjoy your new week ahead.

  6. I had the same thought as Anni - it looks more like an Eagle than a Hawk to me. Juvenile Bald Eagles are dark for the first couple of years until they get the white head and tail feathers of mature eagles.
Really good photo whatever it is!
    Have a wonderful week!

  11. At least you got a picture of this unique Hawk before he flew away. I see them around here too, but they are a much lighter color.
