They seem to have a keen sense of smell...I often wonder how far they can smell something that is dead. And they find the smallest things...we have seen half a dozen or more after a dead squirrel.
he is a nice looking garbage picker. they just seem to KNOW where things are. roadkill brings them almost instantly and they clean it up really fast, next day can't even tell where the possum was
A great close up of this turkey vulture. I just saw some yesterday. They have the largest wing span! I see them so often on the road by road kill. Always in big groups.
Yes, I wonder how far they can smell, too. This is a good picture, despite the subject!
ReplyDeleteWe like the turkey buzzard, but not the smaller black one. They will kill a young calf that is left unattended.
ReplyDeleteHari Om
ReplyDeleteNature at least graced them with a suitably funereal appearance for their task! YAM xx
They are doing a great job as nature's garbage guys.
ReplyDeleteThey provide a very useful service. 🙂
ReplyDeleteA very nice one.
ReplyDeleteI used to think they're ugly, but they aren't. They're useful. And they're certainly common around here.
ReplyDelete...And ugly. Lol
ReplyDeleteA face only their mother could love
Hello,

ReplyDeleteNice shot. They wouldn't be so bad looking if it wasn't for that head...lol
ReplyDeleteA beautiful close-up with nice plumage detail!
ReplyDeleteI like that, nature's garbage guys. I'm going to start calling them that now too. Very nice capture Rose!
ReplyDeleteYou have captured it well in the bright light
ReplyDeleteOkay...all said and done, they clean up all the "mess" that may lead to infection!!
ReplyDeleteWonder if they get stomach poisoning !!!!
Devi:))
A fine close up of this bird. Maybe he can smell.

ReplyDeleteNature's garbage guys - like the way you put that. :) I too wonder how far away they can smell something dead!
ReplyDeleteThey are not the most beautiful or charming birds, but they play their part in nature.
ReplyDeleteThey certainly do their job well, cleaning up a lot of roadkill.
ReplyDeleteThey will hardly move out of the road when I am driving, if they have found something good.
ReplyDeleteA neat capture of this undertaker.
ReplyDeleteThat is a very interesting looking bird.
