This one I know is from Illinois...not too far from me. I have wondered about the upstairs windows. I actually wonder if it has an upstairs or are they just for light.
It looks as though there are some access hatches in the upper level on the end of the barn. My guess would be that hay or straw was loaded into the upper floor via these hatches using a bale elevator. It could then be thrown down to the animals that were kept at ground level during the winter months. That system used to be used frequently in the UK. Does that make sense in your area?
I think there is a floor up there, a loft maybe. I love the patina and color of this beauty. I always thought I would like a restored barn to live in.. that was in my young years though. now i just want something the size of an RV to keep the need for cleaning down
At first I thought it was in good shape, then noticed the roof. But there's someone keeping the grass mowed around it, so it's possibly redeemable! Hay loft is upstairs on most barns.

This is a pretty barn. I like the shape of it. I love the weathered wood. I have seen windows like that in other barns and have always wondered what they were used for. I kept thinking ventilation in the summer.
Looks beautiful Rose...I love that dark roof. Those may be small windows or even ventilators to let in light !!!

I would guess those windows are more for light than anything else, but, I'm not a farmer so what do I know.
