We were sitting out back and this Pileated Woodpecker flew to the tree next door, but stayed on the other side of the tree.
He eventually appeared on the side towards us, but did not linger...he flew 3 or 4 houses down from us. They had cut this tree down within the past year...he started on the east side above...
And worked his way around to the west side of the stump. When he was on the far side, I could only glimpse his topknot as his head bobbed up and down. Whatever he found, he found a good meal. He was there for 15-20 minutes and as busy as a bee the entire time.
He quickly hopped up on the stump when done, did not linger long...
He took off from there for the next street over.

ReplyDeleteVery nice series. I can never get a good shot of a woodpecker. They always stay on the opposite side of the tree from me, and are very fast.
ReplyDeleteGreat shots. They are so flighty at the feeders here but that stump was mighty tasty. It is a female. Males have a red mustache and females a black one. I am not being bossy it is just something I learned.

he is a real beauty, what fun to sit and watch hime. years ago Diane and I were hiking in the woods and we sat for a while to rest. not one but 3 of these big birds came and sat on one tree and entertained us for about half an hour

ReplyDeleteI have seen one here occasionally, but it seems to keep itself deep in the woods - a very shy bird.
What a treat to have been able to watch him for that long.

He is such a handsome fellow. I don't see the Pileated Woodpecker around here, but I do see the red-headed Woodpecker, and they look a bit different than this. Their head is round with a red top of feathers. They are so amusing to watch. These are nice pictures.
