Short-eared owl

I have not seen one of these owls since 2012!  I would love to know why they stopped passing through.  It was nothing to go out there and see 6 or 8 or 10....that remained during the winter.  Then there were none.  Not one single one.

  1. I also wonder where the owls have gone. A couple of years ago I walked the trail after dark, and hearing a rustle overhead, I turned my flashlight upward and there sat an owl. I haven’t seen one since.

  2. They come here in winter too, but usually in ones and twos. One of the emblematic birds of winter.

  3. Perhaps their short ears embarrassed them... But more likely a change in climate or available food.

  4. They are there I'm certain, but with birding it's all about timing. My opinion.

    Extraordinary photo Rose.

  7. This is a wonderful photo. I have never seen an owl other than in pictures. Interesting they would just disappear like that. I wonder what drove them away.

So handsome... and so sad to read of their apparent disappearance. Wonder if it is to do with prey availability? YAM xx

  16. I've always wanted to see an Owl close up, Rose. You were fortunate to see these when you did. I wonder why they don't come around any more? At least you have a special photo of him. : )

  18. A magnificent image! This is a beautiful owl. I hardly ever see owls anymore. I always figure that I don't get out as much as I used to but I also never hear them which I used to regularly.
