I think the above is the male...
And this is his little lady. We were up near Danville, Illinois at the Heron Viewing park. The water was really up...and the only things close enough for photos were these two swans and a pair of Canadian Geese.
The boardwalk goes out over the water forming a sort of circle. To begin with the swans were on the outside of the east side of the circle and the geese were in the water in the enclosed part of the circle. The top swan first chased them to the outside of the west side of the circle. But it kept swimming right beside the boardwalk...after about five or ten minutes, it took off after them and chased them clear across the wetlands. You should have heard the noise...partly the flapping of the wings. Neither the swan nor the geese flew over 3 or 4 feet above the water....then there was the squawking and carrying on. It was something to witness and hear.

ReplyDeleteI never thought I'd think that white swans were unusual, but here in the southern hemisphere, black ones are dominant. I do love to see all swans as they are such majestic creatures. I had no idea they were territorial, too.

ReplyDeleteYou know I live near the St. Joseph River and there is a bay at the end of our road. People along the river complain about the Mute Swans all the time because they attack boaters that are fishing all the time. I personally have never seen them doing anything but floating along minding their own business. I guess you witnessed an event when they thought the geese WERE their business, lol.
