Church doors...

This one set of doors to a church in Terre Haute, Indidana.

The Starlings have it...

I did not feed the birds last winter because every time I put out food there would be a huge flock of starlings come and just inhaled the food I put out.

I decided it was more fun to watch them than to watch nothing.

Yesterday I saw something fly past the front room window to land in the front yard...I jumped up and ran to see and it was one of these Eurasion Collared Doves.  Or I thought it was...but it flew so quickly I was not sure.

Today they came back...they are definitely bigger than our Mourning Doves.  I don't know if all act like these did, but they hardly paused to even eat.  It was hard to get a decent pic of them.  There was a third one...but there seemed to be bickering going on between it and these other.

I don't think I have ever posted this old barn before...

I would love to know what is inside, what is its history?

From the back yard...

We came home one day last week, and saw this guy/gal fly up into the neighbors tree.    I hurried out the back door of the garage with my trusty P&S camera in my hand and zoomed in...the above is the second shot I took.

Then above is the next shot and below is a cropped portion.

I have no idea what happened with his feathers...they are that way in all three shots.  I am not sure of the ID, but would appreciate it if you know, and why you think it is that.  It is in the neighborhood...sometimes I see it fairly often then might go a month that I don't see it any where.

I hope I have opportunities for more photos of dragonflies.  They are always fun to watch.

Horns....

My question is do they ever accidentally bump into each other with those big horns, or are they just aware of their size they way we are of our bodies?  I forget who told me that these cattle are generally real easy going and gentle.

Our temp finally got up to 13º F late this evening, but it still feels cold.  Days like today, an actual free-standing stove with a fire in it would feel wonderful.

I always wonder how birds always know just when to take off.  Do they all hear or see the same thing that makes them take flight?  I assume it must be that and maybe partly reacting to others taking flight.

Just for a change, thought I would show another quilt I did.  One of my daughters claimed it.  It was one of those things that just evolved.  I wish I had better pics but I don't.

I am so hoping to get to go back down to Goose Pond this spring...maybe we will see them again.

Most were at rest...

These cattle are probably some of the most photographed in the area...

I haven't taken many lately, but I used to pass by them more often and take a few pics every time I had a chance.

In flight....

There were four of them,

When I first saw them, one took off to parts un-known and three headed over the road I was on, but on down the way.

Just as I got down there, the adult with the white tail feathers and white head took off and went south.

All I had was my little point and shoot that does not have a view finder...so very lucky to get these.

What is left....

I thought I might find a milkweed pod with seeds left, but no such luck.  This one only had a very few still clinging.

Besides the Snow Geese, I saw this pair of Mallards at another pond.

I so hope to get down there a time or two this year.  It is an hour's drive...

Powdery Mildew

Many moons ago when I worked at the apple orchard, there was a cat there that looked very much like this one.  The white ruff around her neck was more pronounced than this cat.  Maybe because she was a shinier black.   My boss called her Powdery Mildew...

There was a tree about 10-15 foot from the house.  It was not an apple tree, but can't remember for sure what kind it was   It was way taller than the house, and probably at least a foot in diameter.  Up about 12 ft. the tree had a hallowed spot...I think from a limb being cut off now that I think about it.  Well, that is where Powdery Mildew had her kittens.

It was a white world....

Back in January of 2010, it was a white, white world.  The bottom photo is straight out of the camera, with nothing at all done to it.  Neither has been converted to B&W.
