Weird timing... the Eastern Swallowtail butterfly is the North Carolina state butterfly, which I just found out yesterday. Its hind end is usually bright blue, however. Maybe there are variations, so this could be one too. He looks like it! How amazing is that yellow body?

It is a beautiful swallowtail. I had one earlier this summer. Today I am posting a giant swallowtail.
How wonderful for you to capture so many photos of this beautiful butterfly. The butterflies in my garden seldom stay still for me to take any photos. Have a great day!

Those are stunning pictures -- your timing was just perfect! They never want to hold still for me and you are right if the wind is blowing even a little it's hard to get a good picture even if they do hold still! These are just perfect -- the beautiful contrast with the thistle, the perfect butterfly -- wonderful!! Thanks for sharing.

This butterfly is a beauty, Rose. I saw one like this at the nursery about a year ago. I'm glad it stayed put for you to take such awesome pictures. It looks so pretty settling on the purple flower.
