I don't know what kind of hawk this is...I thought it was this one that I used to see out at the strip pits, but when it flew it did not have the white on the tail feathers. I am thinking it is a Red-tailed hawk. When it flew, I could see red at the base of the tail feathers on the back. But other than that bit of red, his back was dark. The way he flew I did not get a good look at his underwings... He was a pretty good sized hawk.
Edited to add: Take a look HERE at the Red -tailed hawk...then scroll down and look through all the other photos, got numbers 8 and 9. To add to the confusion, go HERE and then scroll down and look at the dark morph of the Swainson's Hawk. I still believe it is a Red-tailed because there are so many in the area and we are just east of the range of the Swainson Hawk's area.

Hello, it is a beautiful raptor. It seems kind of dark for Red Tail and the beak does not look like an Eagle's beak. I hope someone can help with the id.

I am no one to ID a bird other than a cardinal or a blue jay, but i can say he is a beauty and what a great shot
I had the same thought as Anni - it looks more like an Eagle than a Hawk to me. Juvenile Bald Eagles are dark for the first couple of years until they get the white head and tail feathers of mature eagles.

Just a guess, but I think it could be a dark phase Red-tail.Great shot, of whoever it is.
a beauty and you sere lucky to get one shot. Mot tines you jsut get the feet and tail in the shot . Those guys are fast.

At least you got a picture of this unique Hawk before he flew away. I see them around here too, but they are a much lighter color.
