We came home one day last week, and saw this guy/gal fly up into the neighbors tree. I hurried out the back door of the garage with my trusty P&S camera in my hand and zoomed in...the above is the second shot I took.
Then above is the next shot and below is a cropped portion.
I have no idea what happened with his feathers...they are that way in all three shots. I am not sure of the ID, but would appreciate it if you know, and why you think it is that. It is in the neighborhood...sometimes I see it fairly often then might go a month that I don't see it any where.

You sure captured the fierceness!! Interesting about the feather. Could he be starting to molt? Do hawks even molt?
I Googled it, and hawks DO molt. But honestly, this looks more like he got caught in a fence or something. Some sort of injury.

My first instinct was to say Cooper's Hawk - distinctive striping and the lighter mottling on the back... but based on these images, the tail is 'square', which would hint at Sharp-shinned Hawk. See here for comparison to determine for yourself. I am more inclined to stick with my first 'diagnosis', as it seems it met with some resistance on the ground. Those tail feathers may have been caught (they look ragged). YAM xx

Definitely a Cooper's Hawk. The tail, striped, is the I'D give-away.

You got excellent photos of him/her. Beyond being a hawk I have no idea on the ID. The other explanations about him getting feather caught in something sound reasonable.

I think it's a Cooper. It's always a good day for me when I see one. Yesterday one visited our feeder, or should I say chased birds from my feeders. 2 misses and he few off. Great pictures.

it is a hawk, I have no idea which kind, I think that feather sticking up is from and injury... what ever he/she is it is beautiful.

I would tend to agree with those who said "Sharpshinned". One thing I know for certain. You got some good shots of him.
