When the temperatures were in the single digits this past winter, and the birds were searching for every seed they could find, they managed to miss a few. Actually more than a few.
We could have had a full crop of them if we had left all that came up. Instead, we left a circle of them under the feeders...just a small circle...maybe 15 or 18 inches across...and it is just full of sunflowers. And they are beginning to bloom. I cannot look at them without getting a smile on my face.

Wonderful photos and story! It's always fun to see flowers come up in unexpected places. I've had sunflower seeds from the birds grow before, but our growing season is too short for them ever to bloom. We always have to start sunflowers inside to get blooms.
Fine sunflower shots. I like how hardy these plants are. My dad used to select seed to develop every taller plants, but they never reaches those ribbon-winners at a local fair! :-)

I think our local chipmunks and squirrels got all the seeds here that the birds dropped. Sunflowers sure do have big beautiful blossoms!

I always forget to plant some till I see somebody's picture and realize it's too late. :)
Lovely photos! I always let them grow under my feeders, too. The goldfinches really appreciate it. I have a bunch that fell into my flower pots this year and will have to uproot them, if I want to put in some flowers that aren't so tall and might look better.
